Summary

  • Top Handle and Back D-Ring A top handle helps you guide your dog close in busy places, and the metal D-ring on the back takes your leash.

  • Service, Emotional Support or In Training The side panels take a SERVICE DOG, EMOTIONAL SUPPORT or IN TRAINING patch, sold separately, so one vest works at home, in class and on the street. A vest does not change a dog's legal status.

  • Patch Panels and ID Pocket Hook-and-loop panels on both sides take patches, and a clear pocket on the back holds a name card with your contact details.

  • Reflective Trim Reflective piping runs around the vest edges, with reflective stripes on the neck strap, so lights pick your dog up on darker walks.

  • Polyester with Mesh Lining The vest is polyester with a breathable mesh lining, and the manufacturer lists it as machine washable.

  • Sizes S to L Three sizes with neck and chest ranges from the manufacturer's chart. Measure both and check the chart before ordering.

Product description

This service dog vest has a top handle, hook-and-loop panels on both sides that hold patches, sold separately, and a clear ID pocket on the back. It is also a service dog harness: adjustable neck and chest straps hold it in place, and the leash clips to the metal D-ring on the back.

Handlers use it as a service animal vest, a working dog vest for therapy visits and everyday errands, and a service dog in training vest for puppies and dogs still learning the job. It works as a service dog training vest too: put it on for every session so the vest becomes the cue that work has started.

Some people search for it as a service dog jacket, a dog service vest or a service vest for dogs. It is the same vest harness. It comes in Camo, Tan, Black or Red, in sizes S, M and L, and the reflective trim and quick-release buckles make these dog vests easy to put on and take off.

A service dog vest with handle for the days your dog works beside you: shop aisles, waiting rooms, training classes and the walk home after dark. A top handle keeps your dog close in a crowd, the leash clips to the metal D-ring on the back, and hook-and-loop patch panels on both sides hold the patch that tells strangers what your dog is doing.

Who wears this vest

Handlers, trainers and families put this vest on very different dogs. Here is how each group uses it.

Service dogs at work. On public-access days the handle lets you steer your dog at your side without tightening the leash, and the ID pocket carries a contact card.

A calm walk through the store, hand on the handle.

Psychiatric and PTSD service dogs. Handlers with a psychiatric service dog, including veterans with a PTSD service dog, often want a calm, easy-to-read working look in crowded places. The top handle gives you something to rest a hand on at a counter or in a line, the leash stays on the back ring, and a SERVICE DOG or DO NOT PET patch, sold separately, helps the people around you leave your dog to work. Camo and Tan are two of the four colors.

Therapy dog teams. Teams visiting a school, library or care home can add a THERAPY DOG patch, sold separately, and slip a name card into the clear pocket on the back. The vest is machine washable polyester with a mesh lining, so it is ready for the next visit.

Dogs in training and puppy raisers. Put the vest on for every session so it becomes the cue that work has started. The panels take a standard IN TRAINING or DO NOT DISTRACT patch, sold separately, and you can swap it for a different patch when your dog graduates. Three sizes let a growing dog move from S to M to L without changing what it is used to.

Emotional support animals. An EMOTIONAL SUPPORT patch, sold separately, tells your building, the clinic waiting room and the people on your street what this dog does for you. At home it is the harness your dog wears for the walk, the car and the couch, and the one that comes off at the quick-release buckles at the end of the day.

Small dogs. Size S lists a chest of 12.5-20.4 in on the manufacturer's chart, so the same vest is made for small dogs as well as large ones. Measure your dog first and go by the numbers, not by breed or weight.

Everyday walks, hikes and nervous dogs. Clip the leash to the back ring for a normal walk, use the handle at road crossings, and let the reflective trim do its work when the light goes. A DO NOT PET or NERVOUS patch, sold separately, buys a shy dog some space on a busy path or a trail. Off the leash in the yard it is a harness like any other, and a machine wash brings it back.

The handle

The top handle is for guiding and keeping your dog close, for example at a curb, a door or a crowded counter. The manufacturer gives no load rating for it, so we do not suggest using it to lift your dog or to brace a person.

Patches: what the panels take

Both side panels are hook-and-loop, so any standard loop-backed patch presses on and peels off. Common wording by group:

  • SERVICE DOG for handlers at work
  • IN TRAINING or DO NOT DISTRACT for dogs in training
  • EMOTIONAL SUPPORT for support animals
  • THERAPY DOG for visiting teams
  • PSYCHIATRIC SERVICE DOG or PTSD SERVICE DOG for handlers who want their dog's role spelled out
  • DO NOT PET, NERVOUS or ASK TO PET for dogs that need space
  • Your dog's name

The patches shown in our photos are for illustration; the manufacturer does not list them as included, so please treat them as not included and order the wording your dog needs separately. The manufacturer does not list the panel size either, so check a patch's dimensions against the panel in our photos, or ask us in chat, before you order.

Know the rules before you buy

  • No vest, ID card or registration is required for a service animal, and none of them makes a dog one. What counts is that the dog is individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability.
  • Staff in a public place may ask only two questions: whether the dog is a service animal required because of a disability, and what work or task it has been trained to perform.
  • Emotional support animals do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.
  • Under U.S. Department of Transportation rules in effect since 2021, airlines no longer have to treat emotional support animals as service animals.
  • Some states have their own laws about passing a pet off as a service dog. Check the rules where you live.

Getting the size right

Measure around your dog's neck and around the chest just behind the front legs with a soft tape, then pick the size where both numbers fall inside the chart. The manufacturer suggests adding 2 to 3 cm (about 1 in) for comfort and notes that hand measurements can be off by 0.5 to 2 cm. Go by the measurements, not by your dog's weight. After the first walk, re-check the straps: you should fit two fingers underneath. Size L lists a chest up to 30.7 in; for bigger dogs, see the large dog harnesses below.

Most asked questions

Typing searches the answers below · Ask Simi opens live chat with your question

Is this an official service dog vest?

There is no official service dog vest. The U.S. Department of Justice says the ADA does not require service animals to wear a vest, ID tag or specific harness, and wearing this vest does not make a dog a service dog. It is a vest harness styled for service and working dogs, with a top handle, patch panels and an ID card pocket.

Can I use this as an emotional support dog vest?

Yes, as a vest. The hook-and-loop panels take an EMOTIONAL SUPPORT patch, sold separately, and the clear pocket holds your contact card. Please know that emotional support animals are not service animals under the ADA and have no public-access rights, so the vest does not get your dog into stores, restaurants or aircraft cabins.

Does it work as a service dog in training vest?

Yes. Put an IN TRAINING or DO NOT DISTRACT patch, sold separately, on the side panels and swap it for a SERVICE DOG patch when your dog graduates. Three sizes let a growing dog move from S to M to L.

How do I choose the right size?

Measure around your dog's neck and chest with a soft tape and pick the size where both measurements fall inside the chart's ranges. The manufacturer suggests adding 2–3 cm (about 1 in) for comfort, and notes hand measurements can be off by 0.5–2 cm. Go by the measurements, not your dog's weight.

Are the SERVICE DOG patches included?

The product photos show SERVICE DOG and EMOTIONAL SUPPORT hook-and-loop patches. The manufacturer does not list the patches as included, so please treat them as not included; the hook-and-loop panels take standard patches.

Is this service dog vest reflective?

Yes. Reflective piping runs along the vest edges and the neck strap has reflective stripes, as shown in the product photos, to help your dog be seen on darker walks.

Does it have an ID holder?

Yes. A clear pocket on the back holds a name card with your dog's name, your phone number and address.

Where does the leash attach?

Clip your leash to the metal D-ring on the back of the vest. The top handle is there to keep your dog close when you need to.

Which colors can I choose?

Camo, Tan, Black and Red, each in sizes S, M and L.

How do I clean it?

The manufacturer lists the harness as machine washable. Let it air dry completely before using it again.

What is it made of?

The vest is polyester with a breathable mesh lining, closed with quick-release buckles.

Does this vest have MOLLE webbing for pouches?

No. It has hook-and-loop patch panels, not MOLLE webbing. For a MOLLE tactical harness, see tactical dog harnesses.

Will it fit an extra-large dog?

The largest size, L, lists a chest of 19.6–30.7 in on the manufacturer's chart. For bigger dogs, see our large dog harnesses.

Is this harness good for training a dog that pulls?

No. This harness isn't designed as a no-pull harness. For dogs that pull, shop our no-pull dog harnesses, which have a front chest clip.

Is this a good psychiatric or PTSD service dog vest?

It is a vest harness with features handlers of psychiatric and PTSD service dogs often look for: a top handle, patch panels for wording such as SERVICE DOG or DO NOT PET (patches sold separately), a clear ID card pocket and reflective trim. No vest is required for a service dog under the ADA, and no vest makes a dog a service dog.

Can I use this as a therapy dog vest?

Yes, as a vest. The panels take a THERAPY DOG patch, sold separately, and the clear pocket holds a name card. Your therapy organization may have its own ID rules, so check with them first.

Is it suitable for a puppy in training?

Size S lists a chest of 12.5-20.4 in on the manufacturer's chart. Measure your puppy's neck and chest and compare both numbers to the chart. Three sizes let a growing dog move from S to M to L.

Will it fit a small dog?

Size S lists a chest of 12.5-20.4 in. Measure your dog around the chest just behind the front legs and go by the numbers, not by weight. The manufacturer notes that hand measurements can be off by 0.5-2 cm.

Can I use the handle to lift my dog or support myself?

No. The handle is for guiding and keeping your dog close. The manufacturer gives no load rating for it, so we do not suggest lifting or bracing with it.

What size patch fits the side panels?

The manufacturer does not list the panel size. Check a patch's dimensions against the panel in our photos, or ask us in chat before you order.

Do service dogs have to wear a vest?

No. The ADA does not require service animals to wear a vest, ID tag or specific harness. This vest is a convenience for handlers who want one.

Is there a service dog vest for large dogs?

Size L lists a chest of 19.6-30.7 in on the manufacturer's chart. For bigger dogs, see our large dog harnesses.
